This weekend I am dogsitting a precious little Boston Terrier named Daisy in the town of Hoboken, just a short trip from my abode. I’m always intrigued by the new businesses that pop up every few months, which I seem to find after the fact. Yesterday morning I found Dames Coffee, at the corner of 1st & Willow, a quaint little place with a simple menu, serving Counter Culture. After taking a sip of my Americano, I realized I’m still not an espresso person, and if I do happen to want coffee, I should stick to my own workplace. Love the proximity for this weekend, however.
Last night, I discovered a bakery at the corner of Church Square Park called Sweet. Though it was right before closing, they still had a decent amount of cupcakes left, and since I was by myself, I only got the minis, and 4 at that: Chocolate Buttercream, Vanilla Buttercream, Coconut, and Red Velvet.
My two favorites were the Vanilla Buttercream and Red Velvet. Though way too much frosting, the vanilla was not too sweet, and the cake was moist and melted in my mouth. The chocolate frosting was just not very good, but the cake was the same, so that saved it. The red velvet was just what you expect from a red velvet, and the cream cheese frosting was the most entertaining piece. The coconut was a bit of a disaster–the frosting was way too sweet for something that small. It almost hurt my mouth it had too much sugar.
I’ll support this bakery, and hopefully going at a different time of day will increase the options. Rumor has it there’s a chocolate ganache cupcake.

What CUTE cupcakes!
Wow that coconut-topped cupcake looks brilliant. I just found your blog from Serious Eats… congrats on your internship! I’m moving to JC in the next few weeks, so I look forward to reading about plenty of local treats on your blog!
*looks brilliant, even if it doesn’t taste so good. (Sorry for the double-comment… I posted too soon!)
i have tried the chocolate ganache and its tooo goooood… go for it.
If you are going for only the look, then yes, they are just darling little cupcakes. However, once we get down to reality, I would hope you all are purchasing the cupcake for far beyond presentation and are looking forward to great taste, yes? I have given sweet a try three times and have been disappointed twice, and you’ll see why later I was pleasantly surprised the third visit. The first time I ordered a bunch of cupcakes for a friend and I to enjoy and it was right before closing….so I figured, what the heck, let me give it another try…maybe the cupcakes were going stale because it was right before they were closing their doors for the evening. The next time I gave them a whirl was about 3 p.m. and they were still just as awful!! I don’t understand this. Does the owner not sample her batter and icing as she’s making it??!! Really, just unbelievable. I went a third time, just today, and tried their cappuccino….it was brilliant! This is why I am writing this blog. A bit upset that sweet, doesn’t have very good “sweets” but at least happy that a place right down the block from where I live at least sells great cappuccino. I will give them that. In regards to the cupcakes, my friend and I literally had to spit them out. I think we’re a bit spoiled by cupcakes we’ve eaten previously….great expectations. I’m just being honest here. Sorry folks.
